Kootenai River White Sturgeon

ESA Status: Threatened

The Kootenai River population of the white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) was listed as endangered on September 6th, 1994.

White sturgeon are found from California to Alaska, and their inland populations, like the Kootenai River population, are landlocked. These sturgeon have been isolated from their anadromous coastal populations for over 10,000 years. The Kootenai population is found in Idaho, Montana, and British Columbia, Canada.

Current conservation actions include adequate flows during reproduction and a juvenile rearing program operated by the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho.
